'Gedachten- overdracht'.

The three experiments, the results, I find very interesting; I just wonder; e.g. in the first experiment: how long does the effect last? Can it be (semi)'permanent' or temporary? (I think it is a matter  of what energy, forces, dominate, maybe a.o. depending on location; direct exposure)

ANOTHER QUESTION IN REGARD TO THIS ARTICLE; SECOND EXPERIMENT: IF E.G. SPECIFIC EMOTIONS, EVERY EMOTION CORRESPONDING WITH  SPECIFIC FREQUENCIES, ELF,  ALTERS/SHAPES THE DNA MOLECULES, ( DNA ACTS AS A FRACTAL ANTENNA) THEN ARE SPECIFIC FREQUENCIES APPLIED TO THE SEPERATE DNA ,  E.G. MILES APPART, VICE VERSA HAVE A SIMILAR EFFECT TO THE BRAIN ACTIVITY OF THE PERSON  SO WHENEVER ( UPDATED) DNA IS TAKEN FROM ONE,STOCKED ( LIKE IN CORONA PERIOD ) THEORETICALLY THIS COULD BE TESTED?

THESE EXPERIMENTS ARE WITH HUMAN DNA, WHAT ABOUT  DNA OF A DOG, OR AN ANT, OR A  PLANT AND THE SO CALLED 'CONSCIOUSNESS' REACTIONS ?

THREE EXPERIMENTS THAT CHANGE EVERYTHING

“All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force….
We must assume behind this force the existence
of a conscious and intelligent Mind.
This Mind is the matrix of all matter.”
— Max Planck, 1944
Just as the 20th century was a time of discovery, we may find that the 21st is a period for making sense of what we’ve found out. Many of the mainstream scientists, teachers, and researchers of our day are engaged in this process. While the existence of a universal energy field had been theorized, visualized, written about, and imagined for a long while, it’s only been recently that experiments were performed proving once and for all that the Matrix exists.
Between 1993 and 2000, a series of unprecedented experiments demonstrated the existence of an underlying field of energy that bathes the universe.
EXPERIMENT I
Quantum biologist Vladimir Poponin reported the research that he and his colleagues, including Peter Gariaev, were doing at the Russian Academy of Sciences. In a paper that appeared in the U.S. in 1995, they described a series of experiments suggesting that human DNA directly affects the physical world through what they believed was a new field of energy connecting the two.
Dr. Poponin was visiting an American institution when this series of experiments was repeated and published. The magnitude of what his study, “The DNA Phantom Effect,” tells us about our world is perhaps best summarized in the words of Poponin himself. In the introduction to his report, he says, “We believe this discovery has tremendous significance for the explanation and deeper understandings of the mechanisms underlying subtle energy phenomena including many of the observed alternative healing phenomena.”
Poponin and Gariaev designed their pioneering experiment to test the behavior of DNA on light particles (photons), the quantum “stuff” that our world is made of. They first removed all the air from a specially designed tube, creating what’s thought of as a vacuum. Traditionally, the term vacuum implies that the container is empty, but even with the air taken out, the scientists knew that something remained inside — photons. Using precisely engineered equipment that could detect the particles, the scientists measured their location within the tube. They wanted to see if the particles of light were scattered everywhere, clinging to the sides of the glass, or perhaps clustered in a pile at the bottom of the container. What they found first came as no surprise: The photons were distributed in a way that was completely unordered. In other words, the particles were everywhere inside of the container — which is precisely what Poponin and his team expected.
In the next part of the experiment, samples of human DNA were placed inside the closed tube with the photons. In the presence of the DNA, the particles of light did something that no one anticipated: Rather than the scattered pattern that the team had seen before, the particles arranged themselves differently in the presence of the living material. The DNA was clearly having a direct influence on the photons, as if shaping them into regular patterns through an invisible force. This is important, since there’s absolutely nothing in the tenets of conventional physics that would allow for this effect. Yet in this controlled environment, DNA — the substance that composes us — was observed and documented to have a direct effect on the quantum stuff that our world is made of!
The next surprise came when the DNA was removed from the container. There was every reason for the scientists involved to believe that the particles of light would return to their original scattered state throughout the tube. But instead, the scientists witnessed a very different occurrence: The photons remained ordered, just as if the DNA were still in the tube. In his own words, Poponin described the light as behaving “surprisingly and counter-intuitively.”
After checking the instruments and the results, Poponin and his colleagues were faced with the task of finding an explanation for what they’d just observed. With the DNA removed from the tube, what was affecting the particles of light? Did the DNA leave something behind, a residual force that lingered after the physical material was removed? Or was an even more mysterious phenomenon at work? Were the DNA and the light particles still connected in some way and on some level that we don’t recognize, even though they were physically separated and no longer in the same tube?
In his summary, Poponin wrote that he and the researchers were “forced to accept the working hypothesis that some new field structure is being excited.” Because the effect appeared to be directly related to the presence of the living material, the phenomenon was named the “DNA phantom effect.” Poponin’s new field structure sounds surprisingly similar to the “matrix” that Max Planck identified more than 50 years earlier, as well as the effects suggested in ancient traditions.
— Summary of Experiment I: This experiment is important for a number of reasons. Perhaps the most obvious is that it clearly shows us a direct relationship between DNA and the energy that our world is made of. Of the many conclusions that we may draw from this powerful demonstration, two are certain:
  1. A type of energy exists that has previously gone unrecognized.
  2. Cells/DNA influence matter through this form of energy.
Produced under the rigid control of laboratory conditions (perhaps for the first time), evidence arose of the powerful relationship that ancient traditions have held sacred for centuries. The DNA changed the behavior of the light particles — the essence of our world. Just as our most cherished traditions and spiritual texts have informed us for so long, the experiment validated that we have a direct effect on the world around us.
Although it stands on its own as a revolutionary and graphic demonstration of the connection between life and matter, it’s within the context of the next two experiments that the DNA phantom effect takes on even greater significance.
EXPERIMENT II
In a 1993 study reported in the journal Advances, the Army performed experiments to determine precisely whether the emotion/DNA connection continues following a separation, and if so, at what distances? The researchers started by collecting a swab of tissue and DNA from the inside of a volunteer’s mouth. This sample was isolated and taken to another room in the same building, where they began to investigate a phenomenon that modern science says shouldn’t exist. In a specially designed chamber, the DNA was measured electrically to see if it responded to the emotions of the person it came from, the donor who was in another room several hundred feet away.
In his room, the subject was shown a series of video images. Designed to create genuine states of emotion inside of his body, this material ranged from graphic wartime footage to erotic images to comedy.
When the donor experienced emotional “peaks” and “dips,” his cells and DNA showed a powerful electrical response at the same instant in time. Although distances measured in hundreds of feet separated the donor and the samples, the DNA acted as if it was still physically connected to his body. The question is “Why?”
Dr. Cleve Backster, had designed the experiment for the Army as part of an ongoing project. His pioneering work on the way that human intention affects plants had led to the military experiments.
The Army stopped their experiments with the donor and his DNA when they were still in the same building, separated by distances of only hundreds of feet. Following those initial studies, however, Dr. Backster described how he and his team had continued the investigations at even greater distances. At one point, a span of 350 miles separated the donor and his cells.
Furthermore, the time between the donor’s experience and the cell’s response was gauged by an atomic clock located in Colorado. In each experiment, the interval measured between the emotion and the cell’s response was zero — the effect was simultaneous. Whether the cells were in the same room or separated by hundreds of miles, the results were the same. When the donor had an emotional experience, the DNA reacted as if it were still connected to the donor’s body in some way. As Dr. Jeffrey Thompson, a colleague of Cleve Backster, states so eloquently, from this viewpoint: “There is no place where one’s body actually ends and no place where it begins.”
— Summary of Experiment II: The implications of this experiment are vast and, to some, a little mind-boggling. If we can’t separate people from the parts of their bodies, does this mean that when a living organ is successfully transplanted into another human being, the two individuals somehow remain connected to each other?
On a typical day, most of us come into contact with dozens, and sometimes hundreds, of other people — and often that contact is physical. Each time we touch another person, even simply by shaking his or her hand, a trace of that individual’s DNA stays with us in the form of skin cells that he or she leaves behind. At the same time, some of ours remains with the other person. Does this mean that we continue to be linked to those we touch as long as the DNA in the cells we share is alive? And if so, just how deep does our connection with them go? The answer to these questions is yes — it appears that the link exists. The quality of that connection, however, appears to be determined by how conscious we are of its existence.
All of these possibilities illustrate the magnitude of what this experiment is showing us. At the same time, they lay the foundation for something even more profound. If the donor is experiencing emotions within his or her body and the DNA is responding to those emotions, then something must be traveling between them that allows the emotion to get from one to the other, right?
Perhaps … or perhaps not. This experiment could just be showing us something else — a powerful idea that’s so simple it’s easy to overlook: Maybe the donor’s emotions didn’t have to travel at all. It could be that there’s no need for the energy to travel from the donor to a distant location in order for it to have an effect. The person’s emotions might have already been in the DNA — and everywhere else, for that matter — the instant they were created.
The experiment suggests four things:
1. A previously unrecognized form of energy exists between living tissues.
2. Cells and DNA communicate through this field of energy.
3. Human emotion has a direct influence on living DNA.
4. Distance appears to be of no consequence with regard to the effect
EXPERIMENT III
The experiments were conducted between 1992 and 1995, and began by isolating human DNA in a glass beaker and then exposing it to a powerful form of feeling known as coherent emotion. According to Glen Rein and Rollin McCraty, the principal researchers, this physiological state may be created intentionally by “using specially designed mental and emotional self-management techniques which involve intentionally quieting the mind, shifting one’s awareness to the heart area and focusing on positive emotions.” They performed a series of tests involving up to five people trained in applying coherent emotion. Using special techniques that analyze the DNA both chemically and visually, the researchers could detect any changes that happened.
The results were undeniable and the implications were unmistakable. The bottom line: Human emotion changed the shape of the DNA! Without physically touching it or doing anything other than creating precise feelings in their bodies, the participants were able to influence the DNA molecules in the beaker.
In the first experiment, which involved only one person, effects were produced by a combination of “directed intention, unconditional love and specific imagery of the DNA molecule.” In the words of one of the researchers, “These experiments revealed that different intentions produced different effects on the DNA molecule causing it to either wind or unwind.” Clearly, the implications are beyond anything that’s been allowed for in traditional scientific theory until now.
We’ve been conditioned to believe that the state of the DNA in our body is a given. Contemporary thinking suggests that it’s a fixed quantity — we “get what we get” when we’re born — and with the exception of drugs, chemicals, and electrical fields, our DNA doesn’t change in response to anything that we can do in our lives. But this experiment shows us that nothing could be further from the truth.
THE INNER TECHNOLOGY TO CHANGE OUR WORLD
So what are these experiments telling us about our relationship to the world? The common denominator among all three is that they involve human DNA. There’s absolutely nothing in conventional wisdom that allows for the material of life in our bodies to have any effect whatsoever on our outer world. And there’s also nothing to suggest that human emotion can in any way affect DNA when it’s inside the body of its owner, let alone when it’s hundreds of miles away. Yet this is precisely what the results are showing us.
When we think of each experiment on its own, without any consideration of the others, it’s interesting. Each one shows us something that appears to be an anomaly existing beyond the bounds of conventional thinking, and some of the findings may even be a little surprising. Without a greater context, we might be tempted to put the experiments into the category of “Things to take another look at on another day … one far, far away.” But when we consider the three experiments together, something no less than paradigm shattering happens: They begin to tell us a story. When we look at each experiment as a piece of a bigger puzzle, that story jumps out at us like the hidden images of an Escher drawing! So let’s look a little deeper… .
In the first experiment, Poponin showed us that human DNA has a direct effect on the vibration of light. In the second — the military experiment — we learned that whether we’re in the same room with our DNA or separated by distances of hundreds of miles, we’re still connected to its molecules, and the effect is the same. In the third experiment, the HeartMath researchers showed us that human emotion has a direct effect on DNA, which in turn directly impacts the stuff our world is made of. This is the beginning of a technology — an inner technology — that does more than simply tell us we can have an effect on our bodies and our world … it shows us that this effect exists and how it works!
All these experiments suggest two similar conclusions, which are the crux of this book:
1. There is something “out there”: the matrix of an energy that connects any one thing with everything else in the universe. This connective field accounts for the unexpected results of the experiments.
2. The DNA in our bodies gives us access to the energy that connects our universe, and emotion is the key to tapping in to the field.
Our oldest and most cherished wisdom traditions remind us that there is, in fact, a language that speaks to the Divine Matrix, one that has no words and doesn’t involve the usual outward signs of communication we make with our hands or body. It comes in a form so simple that we all already know how to “speak” it fluently. In fact, we use it every day of our lives — it is the language of human emotion.
Modern science has discovered that through each emotion we experience in our bodies, we also undergo chemical changes of things such as pH and hormones that mirror our feelings. Through the “positive” experiences of love, compassion, and forgiveness and the “negative” emotions of hate, judgment, and jealousy, we each possess the power to affirm or deny our existence at each moment of every day. Additionally, the same emotion that gives us such power within our bodies extends this force into the quantum world beyond our bodies. We support our loved ones everywhere from the battlefield to the boardroom-without ever leaving our home.
We’re given the power to imagine, dream, and feel life’s possibilities from within the Matrix itself so that it can reflect back to us what we’ve created.
Because we’re already part of the Divine Matrix, it makes perfect sense that we would already have everything we need to communicate with it, without the need for an instruction manual or special training. And we do.
The language of consciousness appears to be the universal experience of emotion. We already know how to love, hate, fear and forgive. Recognizing that these feelings are actually the instructions that program the Divine Matrix, we can hone our skills to better understand how to bring joy, healing, and peace to our lives.

MAGALDI’S BOOK

MASONSILLIMITED RESPONSIBILITY COMPANY
THE DISCOVERY OF THE UR-LODGES
Copertina-MASSONI-di-Gioele-Magaldi

A book about Masonry published in November 2014 has become a best seller in Italy (*although traditional media is mostly indifferent).
The title of the book is ‘Masons illimited responsibility company’ edited by Chiarelettere.
The book was written by Gioele Magaldi who is an historian, a writer, a progressive free-mason and the founder of Grande Oriente Democratico, a Masonic movement.Within the book you discover a superior level of the Masonic international elite, the “Ur-Lodges” which are trans-national secret Lodges that incorporate the affiliation of both men and women of the highest levels in world politics, finance and the industrial sectors and secretly meet and work independently of their own countries within the organization. In the 656 pages of the book you will understand that any and all world decisions that are to do with power, politics, finance and industry are first discussed and decided within these inner sanctums.
These thirty six Ur-Lodges are divided into two parts, conservative and progressive. From these depend Para-Masonic associations such as Tri-lateral Commission or Bilderberg Group. The national lodges have marginal roles compared to these Ur-Lodges.Some conservative Ur-Lodges are: Edmund Burke, Compass Star-Rose, Leviathan, Three Eyes, White Eagle together with the most recent Hathor Pentalpha, while the most ancient progressive Lodge is Thomas Paine where Mr Magaldi himself received initiation. The book is the fruit of four years of work and analysis of documents, archives and artefacts originating from those Ur-Lodges whom Mr Magaldi had access to supported by the work of fellow Masons.
Copies of this evidence-proof have been placed in the custody of lawyers in London, Paris and New York as a personal guarantee.
The author will make these documents public either with another book in the future or if there is any public denial from the people mentioned within his book.
All the powers of our modern and contemporary world have been part of these Ur-Lodges which include the leaders of the former Soviet Union and nowadays Russia, starting by Lenin who was the founder of one of these Ur-Lodges. Other leaders within the Ur-Lodges have been Pope John XXIII, Martin Luther King, but also Bin Laden and the head people of ISIS.Fascism and Nazism, the Greek colonels and the E.U technocracy were all originated from these Masonic super labs.
In Italy three “coups” had been programmed and supported by the neo-aristocratic and conservative Three Eyes Lodge (*founded by Kissinger, Rockefeller and Agnelli amongst others and which had sponsored for the purpose the Italian secret lodge P2- Propaganda 2 of Licio Gelli), but their plans were thwarted by Arthur Schlesinger of the Thomas Paine Progressive Ur-Lodge.
The last chapter of the book is the discussion between frater Jahoel, Mr Magaldi, and four cosmopolite Ur-Masons, one of US and British rootedness Frater K., one French-German, one Arabic-Islamic and one from the Far East. Frater K. , from the Neo-aristocratic Masonry, talks about the united pact for globalisation: “To make people accept such idiotic and unpopular reforms you must frighten them like you would with children”, says he.
The Italian members include Mario Draghi (*President of European Central Bank ) who is in five super Lodges of which the Three Eyes together with Giorgio Napolitano (*President of Italy and whose resignation from office unexpectedly announced for 2015 may also be a result of Mr Magaldi’s revelations).

CE. Arjun Walia : Will We Eventually Be Interacting With Our technology Telepathically?

CE: An interesting article by Arjun Walia:

Will We eventually be Interacting With Our Technology Telepathically?

IN BRIEF

  • The Facts:
In his book, Conscious Universe, Chief Scientist at the Institute of Noetic Science (IONS) Dr. Dean Radin describes his experience working with and developing psi technology.
  • Reflect On:
One day, will our communication with our technology be telepathic?

According to Dr. Dean Radin, Chief Scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, which was founded by Apollo 14 astronaut Dr. Edgar Mitchell, “Quiet research programs examining thee and other exotic technological possibilities have been under way for several years in academic and industrial laboratories.”
 advertisement - learn more
He shares this information in one of his books, The Conscious Universefrom which I obtained the quotes and information below. It’s an extremely fascinating read, and this article doesn’t do it any justice, so please check it out if you’re interested in these types of phenomena.
In his book, Radin cites a story that appeared in the December 10, 1995 issue of the South China Morning Post — the same year the U.S. government declassified the Stargate Program, mentioned above:
SONY, the corporation which revolutionized the world of audio and electronics, has acknowledged it is conducting research into alternative medicine, spoon bending, X-ray vision, telepathy and other forms of extra-sensory perception (ESP).
The institute of Wisdom was founded in 1989 at the instigation of Sony’s founder. . . . The company believes it has proved the existence of ESP, and is already developing a diagnostic machine based on the principles of oriental medicine. . . .
A sub-division of the institute, Extra-Sensory Perception Excitation Research, has worked with more than 100 possessors of ESP. In one test, subjects were presented with two black plastic containers, one of them containing platinum, the other empty. Psychic individuals were able to “see” the platinum seven times out of 10.

Yoishira Sako, a former specialist in artificial intelligence who heads the four man research team, believes commercial applications could apply to his research. “We haven’t come up with such great results so far, he said, “But if we eventually discover that ki energy is based on a kind of information transmission, it would lead to a complete energy revolution. If we can understand the mechanisms of telepathy, it would totally transform communication methods.
This was more than a decade ago, and with all of this research being locked up in Special Access Programs (read more about those here) or otherwise hidden, how are we ever going to have any transparency? Radin makes this point in his book, and highlights how corporations are the same way, reluctant to publicize their interests and findings. But he does provide two more examples, Bell Laboratories and the Contel Technology Centre:
At Bell Labs in the 1980s, I explored mind-matter interaction effects to see whether certain electronic circuits might be susceptible to psi influences, some aspects of this research achieved the Bell Labs imprimatur. At Contel in the early 1990s, I began to experiment with commercially-available, off the shelf electronics to see if ordinary components were susceptible to psi influences. This was an important first step toward building psi based devices, because unless scientists are able to demonstrate proof of principle with existing hardware and software, they will have no hope of obtaining funding to create speculative, custom-made microelectronics from scratch.
He then goes on to share his experience developing a random key for a highly secure data encryption method, where he used a random number generator on a single chip.

“I conducted two psi experiments using this chip, and both were successful in demonstrating mind-matter interaction influences precisely where I had predicted they would appear.”
A prototype was then built, approved, and tested. The test consisted of 10 volunteers who were asked to mentally influence the random system in strictly prescribed ways, and eventually, a patent disclosure was prepared.
“Unfortunately, immediately after we complete the prototyping tests, GTE corporation merged with Contel, and the disruption of the merger halted our efforts on this project.”
When it comes to parapsychology in general, there is a lot of research that has yielded some very interesting results. To emphasize this point, here is a great quote from Dr. Jessica Utts, the Chair of the Department of Statistics at the University of California, Irvine and a professor there since 2008.
“What convinced me was just the evidence, the accumulating evidence as I worked in this field and I got to see more and more of the evidence. I visited the laboratories, even beyond where I was working to see what they were doing and I could see that they had really tight controls…and so I got convinced by the good science that I saw being done. And in fact I will say as a statistician I’ve consulted in a lot of different areas of science; the methodology and the controls on these experiments are tighter than any other area of science where I’ve worked.” (source)
In 1999, Utts published a paper showing that parapsychological experiments have produced much stronger results than those showing a daily dose of aspirin helping to prevent heart attacks. Utts also showed that these results are much stronger than the research behind various drugs like antiplatelets, for example.
Still. This type of study seems to be viewed as false, or pseudoscientific by many.
“There seems to be a deep concern that the whole field will be tarnished by studying a phenomenon that is tainted by its association with superstition, spiritualism and magic. Protecting against this possibility sometimes seems more important than encouraging scientific exploration or protecting academic freedom. But this may be changing.”
Cassandra Vieten, PhD and President/CEO at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (source)

The Takeaway

We are living in a day and age where new information and evidence are constantly emerging, challenging what we once thought was real or what we think we know about ourselves as human beings.  It’s best to keep an open mind. Perhaps there are aspects of ourselves and our consciousness that have yet to be discovered. Perhaps if we learn and grow from these studies, they can help us better ourselves and others.

Could Consciousness all come down to the Way Things Vibrate?

Repeating 2 articles:

Why is my awareness here, while yours is over there? Why is the universe split in two for each of us, into a subject and an infinity of objects? How is each of us our own center of experience, receiving information about the rest of the world out there? Why are some things conscious and others apparently not? Is a rat conscious? A gnat? A bacterium?
These questions are all aspects of the ancient “mind-body problem,” which asks, essentially: What is the relationship between mind and matter? It’s resisted a generally satisfying conclusion for thousands of years.
The mind-body problem enjoyed a major rebranding over the last two decades. Now it’s generally known as the “hard problem” of consciousness, after philosopher David Chalmers coined this term in a now classic paper and further explored it in his 1996 book, “The Conscious Mind: In Search of a Fundamental Theory.”
Chalmers thought the mind-body problem should be called “hard” in comparison to what, with tongue in cheek, he called the “easy” problems of neuroscience: How do neurons and the brain work at the physical level? Of course they’re not actually easy at all. But his point was that they’re relatively easy compared to the truly difficult problem of explaining how consciousness relates to matter.
Over the last decade, my colleague, University of California, Santa Barbara psychology professor Jonathan Schooler and I have developed what we call a “resonance theory of consciousness.” We suggest that resonance – another word for synchronized vibrations – is at the heart of not only human consciousness but also animal consciousness and of physical reality more generally. It sounds like something the hippies might have dreamed up – it’s all vibrations, man! – but stick with me.

All about the vibrations

All things in our universe are constantly in motion, vibrating. Even objects that appear to be stationary are in fact vibrating, oscillating, resonating, at various frequencies. Resonance is a type of motion, characterized by oscillation between two states. And ultimately all matter is just vibrations of various underlying fields. As such, at every scale, all of nature vibrates.
Something interesting happens when different vibrating things come together: They will often start, after a little while, to vibrate together at the same frequency. They “sync up,” sometimes in ways that can seem mysterious. This is described as the phenomenon of spontaneous self-organization.
Mathematician Steven Strogatz provides various examples from physics, biology, chemistry and neuroscience to illustrate “sync” – his term for resonance – in his 2003 book “Sync: How Order Emerges from Chaos in the Universe, Nature, and Daily Life,” including:
  • When fireflies of certain species come together in large gatherings, they start flashing in sync, in ways that can still seem a little mystifying.
  • Lasers are produced when photons of the same power and frequency sync up.
  • The moon’s rotation is exactly synced with its orbit around the Earth such that we always see the same face.
Examining resonance leads to potentially deep insights about the nature of consciousness and about the universe more generally.

Sync inside your skull

Neuroscientists have identified sync in their research, too. Large-scale neuron firing occurs in human brains at measurable frequencies, with mammalian consciousness thought to be commonly associated with various kinds of neuronal sync.
For example, German neurophysiologist Pascal Fries has explored the ways in which various electrical patterns sync in the brain to produce different types of human consciousness.
Fries focuses on gamma, beta and theta waves. These labels refer to the speed of electrical oscillations in the brain, measured by electrodes placed on the outside of the skull. Groups of neurons produce these oscillations as they use electrochemical impulses to communicate with each other. It’s the speed and voltage of these signals that, when averaged, produce EEG waves that can be measured at signature cycles per second.

Each type of synchronized activity is associated with certain types of brain function. artellia/Shutterstock.com

Gamma waves are associated with large-scale coordinated activities like perception, meditation or focused consciousness; beta with maximum brain activity or arousal; and theta with relaxation or daydreaming. These three wave types work together to produce, or at least facilitate, various types of human consciousness, according to Fries. But the exact relationship between electrical brain waves and consciousness is still very much up for debate.
Fries calls his concept “communication through coherence.” For him, it’s all about neuronal synchronization. Synchronization, in terms of shared electrical oscillation rates, allows for smooth communication between neurons and groups of neurons. Without this kind of synchronized coherence, inputs arrive at random phases of the neuron excitability cycle and are ineffective, or at least much less effective, in communication.

A resonance theory of consciousness

Our resonance theory builds upon the work of Fries and many others, with a broader approach that can help to explain not only human and mammalian consciousness, but also consciousness more broadly.
Based on the observed behavior of the entities that surround us, from electrons to atoms to molecules, to bacteria to mice, bats, rats, and on, we suggest that all things may be viewed as at least a little conscious. This sounds strange at first blush, but “panpsychism” – the view that all matter has some associated consciousness – is an increasingly accepted position with respect to the nature of consciousness.
The panpsychist argues that consciousness did not emerge at some point during evolution. Rather, it’s always associated with matter and vice versa – they’re two sides of the same coin. But the large majority of the mind associated with the various types of matter in our universe is extremely rudimentary. An electron or an atom, for example, enjoys just a tiny amount of consciousness. But as matter becomes more interconnected and rich, so does the mind, and vice versa, according to this way of thinking.
Biological organisms can quickly exchange information through various biophysical pathways, both electrical and electrochemical. Non-biological structures can only exchange information internally using heat/thermal pathways – much slower and far less rich in information in comparison. Living things leverage their speedier information flows into larger-scale consciousness than what would occur in similar-size things like boulders or piles of sand, for example. There’s much greater internal connection and thus far more “going on” in biological structures than in a boulder or a pile of sand.
Under our approach, boulders and piles of sand are “mere aggregates,” just collections of highly rudimentary conscious entities at the atomic or molecular level only. That’s in contrast to what happens in biological life forms where the combinations of these micro-conscious entities together create a higher level macro-conscious entity. For us, this combination process is the hallmark of biological life.
The central thesis of our approach is this: the particular linkages that allow for large-scale consciousness – like those humans and other mammals enjoy – result from a shared resonance among many smaller constituents. The speed of the resonant waves that are present is the limiting factor that determines the size of each conscious entity in each moment.
As a particular shared resonance expands to more and more constituents, the new conscious entity that results from this resonance and combination grows larger and more complex. So the shared resonance in a human brain that achieves gamma synchrony, for example, includes a far larger number of neurons and neuronal connections than is the case for beta or theta rhythms alone.
What about larger inter-organism resonance like the cloud of fireflies with their little lights flashing in sync? Researchers think their bioluminescent resonance arises due to internal biological oscillators that automatically result in each firefly syncing up with its neighbors.
Is this group of fireflies enjoying a higher level of group consciousness? Probably not, since we can explain the phenomenon without recourse to any intelligence or consciousness. But in biological structures with the right kind of information pathways and processing power, these tendencies toward self-organization can and often do produce larger-scale conscious entities.
Our resonance theory of consciousness attempts to provide a unified framework that includes neuroscience, as well as more fundamental questions of neurobiology and biophysics, and also the philosophy of mind. It gets to the heart of the differences that matter when it comes to consciousness and the evolution of physical systems.
It is all about vibrations, but it’s also about the type of vibrations and, most importantly, about shared vibrations.

When faced with a predator or sudden danger, the heart rate goes up, breathing becomes more rapid, and fuel in the form of glucose is pumped throughout the body to prepare an animal to fight or flee.
These physiological changes, which constitute the "fight or flight" response, are thought to be triggered in part by the hormone adrenaline.
But a new study from Columbia researchers suggests that bony vertebrates can't muster this response to danger without the skeleton. The researchers found in mice and humans that almost immediately after the brain recognizes danger, it instructs the skeleton to flood the bloodstream with the bone-derived hormone osteocalcin, which is needed to turn on the fight or flight response.
"In bony vertebrates, the acute stress response is not possible without osteocalcin," says the study's senior investigator Gérard Karsenty, MD, PhD, chair of the Department of Genetics and Development at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons.
"It completely changes how we think about how acute stress responses occur."
Why Bone?
"The view of bones as merely an assembly of calcified tubes is deeply entrenched in our biomedical culture," Karsenty says. But about a decade ago, his lab hypothesized and demonstrated that the skeleton has hidden influences on other organs.
The research revealed that the skeleton releases osteocalcin, which travels through the bloodstream to affect the functions of the biology of the pancreas, the brain, muscles, and other organs.
A series of studies since then have shown that osteocalcin helps regulate metabolism by increasing the ability of cells to take in glucose, improves memory, and helps animals run faster with greater endurance.
Why does bone have all these seemingly unrelated effects on other organs?
"If you think of bone as something that evolved to protect the organism from danger -- the skull protects the brain from trauma, the skeleton allows vertebrates to escape predators, and even the bones in the ear alert us to approaching danger -- the hormonal functions of osteocalcin begin to make sense," Karsenty says. If bone evolved as a means to escape danger, Karsenty hypothesized that the skeleton should also be involved in the acute stress response, which is activated in the presence of danger.
Osteocalcin Necessary to React to Danger
If osteocalcin helps bring about the acute stress response, it must work fast, in the first few minutes after danger is detected.
In the new study, the researchers presented mice with predator urine and other stressors and looked for changes in the bloodstream. Within 2 to 3 minutes, they saw osteocalcin levels spike.
Similarly in people, the researchers found that osteocalcin also surges in people when they are subjected to the stress of public speaking or cross-examination.
When osteocalcin levels increased, heart rate, body temperature, and blood glucose levels in the mice also rose as the fight or flight response kicked in.
In contrast, mice that had been genetically engineered so that they were unable to make osteocalcin or its receptor were totally indifferent to the stressor. "Without osteocalcin, they didn't react strongly to the perceived danger," Karsenty says. "In the wild, they'd have a short day."
As a final test, the researchers were able to bring on an acute stress response in unstressed mice simply by injecting large amounts of osteocalcin.
Adrenaline Not Necessary for Fight or Flight
The findings may also explain why animals without adrenal glands and adrenal-insufficient patients -- with no means of producing adrenaline or other adrenal hormones -- can develop an acute stress response.
Among mice, this capability disappeared when the mice were unable to produce large amounts of osteocalcin.
"This shows us that circulating levels of osteocalcin are enough to drive the acute stress response," says Karsenty.
Physiology the New Frontier of Biology
Physiology may sound like old-fashioned biology, but new genetic techniques developed in the last 15 years have established it as a new frontier in science.
The ability to inactivate single genes in specific cells inside an animal, and at specific times, has led to the identification of many new inter-organ relationships. The skeleton is just one example; the heart and muscles are also exerting influence over other organs.
"I have no doubt that there are many more new inter-organ signals to be discovered," Karsenty says, "and these interactions may be as important as the ones discovered in the early part of the 20th century."
